iTALIAN TRADITIONS IN B.C
Holiday Traditions
Christmas: Christmas is obviously a universal holiday although different cultures and different people celebrate and eat their own way on this day. On Christmas Italians celebrate the way they do on most holidays; they spend time with their families and they eat, a lot. For instance, in our city's Italian culture club we eat ravioli, bread, seafood items, turkey, and potatoes on Christmas. In Italy, however, they eat heavy foods, such as meats like pork or lamb, usually tortellini is served as the first meal on Christmas, and the popular cakes of this holiday include panettone and pandoro.

Easter: Easter Sunday is another holiday celebrated with mass amounts of food and family members. Here in British Columbia we often eat either turkey or ham. In Italy, they eat lamb and oddly enough pizza. Dessert is usually assorted Easter cakes.
Religious Holidays: Religious holidays are a pretty big deal in Italy. People gather around and celebrate as they would on a more common holiday, such as Christmas. Religious holidays are celebrated with the family and lots of food!

Local Kamloops Traditions
Festiva: Here in Kamloops at our Italian culture club we have an Italian Celebration called Festiva in which we show our Italian pride. Festiva is celebrated with cultural dancers, singing, food, games and traditions. Festiva usually goes for one nights and one day. It all starts on a Saturday, the Italian members and past-members of the club come to eat and converse with the other members. There is traditional Italian music, and a fun time! However, the following day (Sunday) is even more fun than the previous night and includes a traditional Italian maiden delivering desserts. The day also has dancing, games for the children, and bocci matches.
Familia Day: Familia Day in Kamloops is when the Italian club members and their families come out to the culture club and enjoy a day in the sun. This day features a buffet with traditional and modern foods, multiple booths are set up such as Henna tattoos. Activities and games for children are also part of Familia Day. This day is to enjoy your heritage and show pride with Italian friends and family.
